Revised Continuing Education Requirements for all Maryland Licensed Social Workers

The Maryland State Board of Social Work Examiners has approved the change in the continuing education requirements for all Maryland licensed social workers. The new requirements went into effect on 11/1/03 and the first renewal group was October, 2004. The next renewal group is October 2005.
CATEGORY I ACTIVITIES
- Programs given by Board-authorized sponsors which are comprised of a minimum of 3 hours on a single subject, or with individual sessions of at least 1.5 hours on a subject grouped together in a series.
- Real-time transactions between teachers and learners (may include face-to-face and interactive technology)
- Courses, seminars, workshops, symposiums, conferences, staff development, case conferences, grand rounds, and attendance or presentation of programs offered at professional or scientific meetings
CREDITS:
- AT LEAST 20 of the required 40 credit hours MUST BE EARNED in this category.
- ALL 40 credit hours MAY be earned in this category.
- AT LEAST 3 credit hours MUST be earned in ETHICS AND PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT, including boundary issues.
DOCUMENTATION:
- An official transcript for academic courses, a certificate of participation, which is signed and dated by the approved sponsor indicating credit hours earned.
CATEGORY II ACTIVITIES
- Programs which are less structured and not Board authorized.
- Workshops, conferences, in-service trainings, structured peer-case conferences among LCSWs and LCSW-Cs, journal clubs, preparation and presentation of a scientific or professional paper at a meeting of a scientific or professional organization; authoring, editing, or reviewing a professional publication; preparing and presenting Category 1 activities.
- Audio-visual instructional programs and home-study courses provided by a Board approved Category 1 sponsor
NO MORE THAN 10 CREDIT HOURS CAN BE EARNED FROM AUDIO-VISUAL AND
HOME-STUDY PROGRAMS.
CREDITS:
- Twenty (20) of the required 40 credit hours MAY be earned in this category.
DOCUMENTATION:
- A certificate of participation if one is available.
- If a certificate of participation is not offered: the dates when the program was presented; the name(s) of the presenter(s); topics presented; and an outline of the presentation (this can be from your notes).
- Proof of presentations made, reprints of publications, letters from educational institutions when credit is claimed for the instruction of students.
- Dates, times and names of participants in structured peer-case conferences and journal club activities.
OTHER ITEMS
- No credit can be earned for activities related to consultation or the provision of and participation in planned supervisory activities as a supervisor or supervisee.
- Social workers shall retain CE records for 1 year after the license renewal date. The Board conducts random audits each year.
- A credit hour means 1 hour of and includes the terms “contact hour”, “clock hour”, “hour”, or “continuing education credit”. If continuing education units are expressed in percentages, then .3 CEUs equals 3 credit hours.
- In a classroom, one 50-minute hour is regarded as 1 continuing education credit hour.
- One academic credit is equal to 15 credit hours.
- A social worker can request an exception from any of the continuing education requirements based upon a handicap or prolonged illness.
